A very fine Roman intaglio of a sphinx in white chalcedony depicted laying down facing left, the sphinx has its characteristic eagle wings, snake tail, lion body and female human head, carved with very fine detail and it is set in its original gold ring dating to the 1st to 2nd century AD.

The x-ray fluorescence test shows no trace of modern elements in the gold ring.
