Intaglio ring of a parrot
Description
A 1st to 2nd century AD Roman intaglio, carved from beautiful banded agate, depicts a parrot perched on a tree branch. Parrots, first introduced to the ancient Greek world by Alexander the Great around 327 BC, captivated him with their speaking ability and believed longevity of around 40 years, the bird was believed to hold great magical powers and became known as Alexandrines due to Alexander's introduction.
The intaglio is flanked by a round-cut vivid yellow diamond on one shoulder and a pale green square-cut diamond on the other. The inner shank bears the stamp "FM," presumably the maker's mark, and "750" for 18 carats gold.
