Intaglio of an orator
Description
A late 18th to early 19th century gold fob seal of small size with an engraved carnelian stone of a head of a Greek actor or orator dating to the 1st to 2nd century BC. The carving of this intaglio is remarkable in that the skill of the engraver has captured the subject in full swing of his speech with mouth open and the tension in the muscles of the face particularly around the eyes. The amount of emotion the engraver has captured is superb for a stone of such small size.
