Description
An extremely fine and large Carnelian intaglio dating to the 1st to 2nd century A.D, Roman imperial times, set in a gold ring. A Gryllus is not a mythological creature but a Roman fictional being made of the combination of human and animal elements, usually depicted for comic purposes. In this intaglio the main body is a Silenus's head, standing on two chicken legs. Emerging from the base of its neck is a sheep's head. On top of Silenus's head, there appears to be a camel or horse’s head, chewing on a palm branch.
