Drunken Maened intaglio ring
Description
A roman intaglio, 2nd to 3rd century AD, of a drunken Maenad holding a wine amphora in an inebriated state with a cupid playing a flute and dancing in front of her.
Maenads were followers of Dionysus and prepared the wine to be consumed whilst dancing and offering sex to reach a state of frenzied ecstasy. In this altered state, it was believed they were possessed by the God himself and delivered prophecies on his behalf.
